Opening file in another application

Let's say my android app downloads a file, 'story.epub' (ebook format) and I want it to be opened in another application such as an ebook reader. Are there any commands that do this?

@Wolf I am guessing, but I think that file association is handled by Android settings. I suppose that you just need to understand how to "open" your file in android, and then the user would decide which app should handle it.
I am thinking about files open with browsers from the internet: if no reader is available the file is just downloaded, otherwise I get an os window which asks what to do with it (which app should open it - think about zip or pdf files)
