Does string.char() have limits?

I was playing with string.char() to try to get a division sign on screen. If I use numbers up to 126 (decimal) the character shows but anything from 128 upwards doesn't show. Don't know about 127 as I haven't yet found a font with a character at that setting. The problem I have is that the code for the division sign is 247 so I can't get it to show.

Does anyone know how to do it? Thanks.
